Known for her squeaky clean song lyrics and role as the incorrigibly optimistic Sonny on Disney’s tween comedy, Sonny with a Chance, teen queen Demi Lovato got serious Sunday night about a growing problem among America’s youth.

“RIP Phoebe Prince, a young teen who was bullied to death. People don’t realize how serious bullying is these days..” tweeted Lovato late Sunday night, referencing the case of a 15-year-old girl who committed suicide earlier this year after being bullied by her peers.

Prince, an Irish immigrant attending school in Massachusetts, took her own life in January after months of bullying by a group of students at her South Hadley high school.

“Verbal abuse IS (if not more) as serious as physical harassment..” tweeted Lovato. “PLEASE make a difference in your school..Put an end to cliques..PLEASE put an end to catty fights and ugly rumors… It’s not worth it.”

“YOU can be the difference in your school/city and could save lives..” appealed the starlet.

In a series of seven Twitter posts on the topic, Lovato also encouraged fans to pick up a copy of the latest issue of People magazine, posting a picture of the magazine which features Prince’s face and ordeal as the cover story.

So far six teens have been indicted in Prince’s case, four of which are female students charged with crimes including stalking, violation of civil rights and criminal harassment.

“I would’ve done anything to give Phoebe a hug, relate to one another, and tell her it was going to be okay..” said Lovato. “My heart and prayers go out to Phoebe’s friends and family.. I’m here for you.”

And it appears her words have not fallen on deaf ears. Just moments after posting her tweets, Lovato began receiving an outpouring of fan responses:

“u know wat i WILL be the difference in my town… i WILL #Stopbullying” tweeted @Jonas2Australia.
